My name is Michael and I am the brewer at Bluebird Brewing. After spending 10 years in the corporate IT world followed by 6 years at home raising my children, I felt I wanted to do something new.

When I first started thinking about turning my passion into a business I asked my self how I could do things differently. Being an avid home brewer for many years I have always had my favorite beers on tap at home. When my friends came over to try my new batch they always mentioned how they wished they could have beer on tap at home. So I started asking them why they didn't. The majority of the answers were the same and came down to 1 question. Where can I buy beer in kegs?
Well, beer has always been available in kegs, is the simple answer. It is the oldest form of beer packaging. From ancient clay pots, through wooden barrels, to the modern stainless steel barrels we see today. However the problem the home drinker faces is the size of the barrels. Traditionally the large breweries only supplied large volume barrels to the public, usually 50L. But these large volumes were too much for home drinkers, 50L is a lot of beer to drink, also the range of beers available was very limited.

With the explosion of the craft beer scene and the increase in different styles, customers had much more choice when it came to their favorite tipple. But the keg sizes available never really changed, so draught beer at home was still the domain of the home brewer.

The popularity in craft beer went hand in hand with the rise in popularity of home brewing. Likewise, equipment and ingredients got better and as more people switched to all grain brewing the quality of the beer improved. When technological advancements were introduced to the mix more people had access to equipment to make high quality beer and have it on tap at home. But still it was the home brewers who benefited as the general public could still not get a range of keg sizes from beer producers.

Then after buying my Kegerator and seeing how much my friends loved it I started investigating selling the beer I made at home, and as it turns out, it is not at all difficult to get a license to do just that. And so Bluebird Brewing was born.

The direction I decided to take my brewery in is more of a beer club than a market to the masses model. Helping local beer lovers to set up their own draught systems at home and supplying them with beer in more convenient keg sizes to suite their needs. And using the new technologies available to make taking craft beer out with you a more pleasurable and simpler experience.
